Wayanad District, in the north-east of Kerala , India , was formed on November 1 , 1980 as the 12th district, carved out of Kozhikode and Kannur districts It lies between north latitude 11degree 26’28’’ and 11degree 48’22’’ and east longitude 75 degree 46’38’’ and 76 degree 26’11’’. It lies in the altitude of 3000 feet above Sea Level.
There are many myths for the origination of the name “ Wayanad “. The main is from “Vayalnadu “ which means the land of paddy fields. It’s reason is the production of rarest of rare species of paddy known as “Jeerakasala “ and “Gandhakasala” , which was attractive ‘spice model’ paddy. Another is ‘Via nadu’, which denotes the passage from Wayanad to Kerala.In Wayanad there is no Community Development Blocks. There is only Block Panchayaths which is catered to three Taluks namely Vythii, Bathery and Manandavadi. Such as there is no statutory town. There is only one Municipality at Kalpetta where the District Headquarters situate. There is only revenue Division <Taluks > which includes three Taluks of Vythiri , Manadavadi and Sulthan Bathery under which there are 48 Revenue Villages.
Wayanad is the only district in Kerala which shares its border with both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Therefore South Indians can easily access this tourist spot. It is blessed with mountains, hills valleys and plenty of paddy fields surrounded by rivers and streams. Wayanad is a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. . The majestic mountains of the Western Ghats add to the charm of Wayanad. it is a gift to mankind from nature.
Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary in Muthanga has fair numbers of the magnificent mammals (elephants). Project Elephant was proposed to prevent ruthless hunting of the tuckers for commercial reasons. The Wildlife Species that could be spotted during Wayanad Wildlife Safari include Elephants, Gaur, Cheetal, Dholes, Jackals, Tigers and Otters. The avocational species that could be spotted on a Wayanad wildlife safari include Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Hawk Eagle, Malabar Grey Hornbill and King Vultures. Common leopard butterfly could be spotted if you are lucky enough.Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary at Muthanga is a very famous tourist attraction for children and nature lovers. Ootty the “Queen of hills’ is situated within 115 km from the District Headquarters Kalpetta. So also the glorious Mysore palace and Mysore city is situated within the same radius.
